Reflecting on why we do what we do, sometimes I think we may underestimate the difference we are making every day when we work with our clients. Just recently, I received an email from a client that I worked with ten years ago. I was surprised to hear from him, but remembered him well. Though he wasn’t a client I worked with through AHSS, ten years ago he could have been any one of the children I work with today.
To my surprise, he had sought me out to write to me and let me know the impact I had on his life. He went on to say that he had experienced much success since our work together and had just recently been offered a position with Google! In his words, when he was offered the position he thought of me and wanted to thank me for helping him to develop the skills to have achieved the success he is experiencing today.
His email really made me pause and reflect on what I do every day and how meaningful these learning experiences are for our clients. While we might think some children aren’t appreciative or don’t quite comprehend what we are doing now, just maybe ten years from now they will as well.
