Previously, we have talked about various companies and their initiatives to hire individuals on the autism spectrum. Microsoft recently announced that they are starting a pilot program to hire people with autism for full time positions. Acknowledging the fact that autistic individuals have special talents and skills that can help companies is important. For example many individuals on the spectrum can excel at repetitive detail-oriented tasks.
While Microsoft’s announcement is great, real progress will happen when companies hiring autistic individuals is part of a regular hiring plan and does not warrant a press release.
