If you’re a parent who has recently found out that your child has a major diagnosis for autism, an illness, or another disorder, it can be difficult knowing even where to start. It may be a lot to process and come to terms with. A mom blogger on TheMighty.com shared her first steps after learning of her son’s diagnosis. Here are a few of her important tips:
1. Ask for help
Don’t be ashamed of accepting help from people. When people ask to help, it’s because they care, so let them.
2. Join online communities for special needs parents
Other parents in the same situation as you will be the only ones to truly empathize and understand what you’re going through. These forums can be a safe space to vent and ask for advice.
3. It’s okay to not be okay
It is extremely difficult to come to terms with a major diagnosis, so if you’re not okay, that is absolutely normal. Seeking help from professionals as you process this new information.
4. Prepare to be amazed by what your child can do
